How to Get Gontr Mael in Baldur’s Gate 3 – Legendary Longbow

In Baldur’s Gate 3, The Gontr Mael is a powerful Legendary Longbow, a reward for defeating construct in Act 3, and here is how to get it in BG3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) Gontr Mael – Legendary Longbow

Gontr Mael

In Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3), The Gontr Mael is a legendary longbow and an exceptional choice for characters of all classes. It’s the best bow in the game, with significant damage and a weapon enchantment bonus of +3. The promised Victory bonus grants each hit a chance to afflict the target with a Guiding Bolt, adding a unique and robust range attack to already severe damage from the bow’s raw power. This bow also grants the Celestial Haste and Bolt of Celestial Light actions.

The main benefit of this weapon is Celestial Haste, which provides five turns of an additional action without becoming lethargic (skips your next turn) when your turn ends. It’s a better version of Haste Spell. As a result, you can cast it on yourself and still use your action along with +2 AC, double movement, and Advantage on Dexterity saving throws.

Gontr Mael is a top-tier choice for adventurers seeking to augment their ranged combat capabilities and significantly impact the battlefield. Classes that will highly benefit from it are Rogue, Ranger, Barbarian, Fighter, or Paladin. You can equip it to your character’s main hand weapon slot in the inventory, providing additional bonuses and buffs. The user needs Martial Weapon proficiency or suffers penalties while wearing the weapon. It’s important to note that proficiency with Longbows is required to use this weapon, so the Elf race is an excellent choice.

The Gontr Mael features in BG3:

  • Weapon Type: Longbow, Two-Handed
  • Damage: 1d8 +8 Piercing, +2 Piercing
  • Range: 18m
  • Proficiency Requirement: Martial Weapon Proficiency

How to Get The Gontr Mael in Baldur’s Gate 3

There are two ways to obtain the Gontr Mael. You can head directly to the bow location, kill everyone, and get the legendary weapon. Alternatively, you can try to save enslaved workers and their families and complete a few essential quests: Save the Gondians, Rescue the Grand Duke, and Disable the Watchers Quests. The second option is full of challenging fights and much longer because you must complete the story-related quests. However, you won’t need to return to do it. Below, you’ll find both solutions. Let’s look at how to get the legendary Bow in Baldur’s Gate 3 – Gontr Mael!

Go Directly to the Gontr Mael Location – Solution

Steel Watch Foundry Location and Gontr Mael Legendary Bow Location - Baldur’s Gate 3 BG3

Once you arrive at Baldur’s Gate Lower City, go to Steel Watch Foundry (X: -291 Y: -163), located on the southwest side of the map next to the Grey Harbour Docks fast travel waypoint. You’ll need to unlock one of the gates with a 20 DC Slight of Hand skill check, and after that, prepare for many fights. First, the patroling Steel Guards will attack you on the side. Then, as soon as you enter the factory, you’ll have either the cutscene or the fight. It all depends on whether you made any progress toward Save the Gondians quest.

Proceed to the back room. You may need to lockpick the door again and take the stairs to the Steel Watch Foundry basements. Everyone will attack you inside, so you must defeat them each time you enter a new location before going further into the factory. Ultimately, you’ll come across Steel Watcher Titan, a boss with a legendary bow. Defeat it and loot the Gontr Mael from the construct body.

Obtain the Legendary Bow and Complete the Story-Related Quests

First, you should pick up the Disable the Watchers Quest, as it will earn you some experience points along the way and allow you to speak with Wyll’s father, which will come into play later on. You can do it in Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. It’s the only entrance to the Baldur’s Gate in Act 3, an old stronghold north of the Rivington map. Visit the audience hall and speak with Gortash and the Grand Duke. As soon as you leave the audience hall, speak with Mizora. She will tell you that Wyll’s father was “relocated.” This should update both quests: Rescue the Grand Duke and Disable the Watchers Quests.

You can Go to Steel Watch Foundry

At this point, you have two choices: you can go to the Steel Watch Foundry and pick up Save the Gondians quest from Gondian Zanner Tooblin, but that requires you to break into the factory, potentially kill few Steel Guardians and, in the process and if you get caught you may lose the opportunity to save all enslaved workers.

Save the Gondians quest speak with Gondian Zanner Tooblin - BG3 - Baldur's Gate 3

However, you’ll learn more about the Gondians’ situation first. Inside (X: -319 Y: -149), you’ll learn that the workers can’t obey their oppressors because their families are held hostages in underwater prisons, and any attempt to escape or disobey is punished with the death of one of them. So even though the Gontr Mael Legendary Bow is in Steel Watch Foundry, breaking in at this point may result in the death of all workers and their families.

Additionally, you can sneak into the basement (X: -319 Y: -149), accessible from the Security Office, where you’ll find the prison clue. It’s a small note called Vessel Identified on the shelf on the platform above the basement’s factory (X: -1962 Y: 456).

Or Go Stright to The Iron Throne Prison

Alternatively, you can skip the visit to Steel Watch Foundry and, after meeting with Gortash in Wyrm’s Rock Fortress, go straight to the prison and save the Gondians’ families and workers in the Steel Watch Foundry to finally get this BG3 legendary weapon. I advise you to use the second solution and head straight to the underwater prison – the Iron Throne.

Please Note: You can get the Wavemother’s Robe only if you pick up the Avenge the Drowned quest before heading to the Iron Throne poison, so if you would like to obtain this robe, go now to the Water’s Queen House located just south of Steel Watch Foundry and take the Avenge the Drowned quest from Wavemother.

Flymm Cargo and Defeat the Monsters

Iron Throne Prison is underwater, and a submarine is the only way to get there. Luckily, one in the city sewers is below Flym Cargo (X: -162 Y: -142), located east of Steel Watch Foundry. Once you arrive, there is a basement trapdoor under the crates, so move them around and go down to find Redhammer the Deviser; pass a persuasion check to ask him for help getting to the Iron Throne Prison.

Alternatively, if you kill him, you can drive the submarine yourself. If you also picked up Avenge the Drowned Quest, you’ll learn that the submarine is a reason for Weavemother’s problems, so killing the dwarf will update the quest, and you can head back for your reward – the Wavemother’s Robe. However, you can still get the robe if you let him live and take you to prison. The choice is yours.

Save the Gondians – Iron Throne Prison

A hologram of Gortsh will appear, and he will order you to return. You need to ignore him, but that will trigger an auto-destruction in prison, and you have only a few turns to save everyone. It turns out that not only Gondians are trapped in prison, but also Wyll’s father and friendly Mind Flayer Omeluum. Save the game here. Your goal is to rescue everyone and return with them to the submarine.

You can do it fast with Potion of Speed, Misty Step, Dash, or any consumable scroll or spell. If you can summon any additional allies, such as elementals, undead, or creatures, it’s time to get their help because the prison is full of Sahuagin Hunters who will immediately attack you. So your summoned allies can hold enemies’ attention and fight them while you try to save as many prisoners as possible.

Iron Throne Prison Strategy

You can lower the difficulty to make this part easier. On Explorer Difficulty, you will have eight turns. Still, on Balanced and Tactician difficulties, you will have only 6, and enemies will be noticeably more challenging, but regardless, the task is doable. Here is the best strategy that worked for us in the Iron Throne to save as many prisoners as possible and get a better quest outcome:

Save the Gondians and grand Duke - Iron Throne Prison Strategy - BG3 - Baldur's Gate 3
  • Unchain your team and send them three ways: south, east, and west. (check the image above for reference).
  • For now, skip saving the prisoners in the cells in the center. You’ll rescue them on your way back with whoever has time left and will finish first. Instead, focus on the far sides of the prison first.
  • East Wing: Wyll’s Father and three prisoners’ cells are to the east, so send their way one DPS and a healer in case Grand Duke needs healing. (check the map above – red line)
    • If you declined the Mizora’s deal with Wyll or proceed directly to the Iron Throne, she will appear and conjure explosive spiders after the Duke escapes his cell.
  • South Wing: The south wing is filled with many enemies who will constantly spawn in the first room. If you have any summoned creatures, send them there as a priority. Two cells are in the south wing, and Omeluum is trapped in the laboratory in the southwest. Again, save mind flayer first, then on your way back, open south cells, then central cells if you still have time. (check the map above – green line)
  • West Wing: Meanwhile, one fast DPS should open the cells in the west wing. There will be a few Sahuagin Hunters there, and regardless of the difficulty level, it will be challenging. Any additional summoned creature will be helpful. (check the map above – blue line).

Using Dash and Misty Step, it will take approximately 2-3 turns to return to the submarine from the prison wings’ far sides. As a result, you have only a few to save everyone. Good luck!

Return to Baldur’s Gate

Once that is resolved, you will all safely return to the surface. Speak with rescued prisoners to update your quests, including Omeluum, Grand Duke, and Wyll. As soon as you arrive, if you have the Weavemother’s quest and didn’t kill Redhammer the Deviser, she will wait for you. You have two choices to get Wavemother’s Robe. Let her take the dwarf or defeat her and her allies and loot the robe from her body.

Return to Steel Watch Foundry – Disable the Watchers Quest

It’s time to Return to the Steel Watch Foundry (X: -319 Y: -149) and get the Gontr Mael – Legendary Bow! You’ll need to open or destroy the gate and the door inside and defeat any Steel Construct on your path. When you enter, you’ll see workers fighting with their oppressors.

Save the Gondians - the Motivators - BG3 - Baldur's Gate 3

During the fight, the Black Gauntlets will drop the Motivators upon their death. Those Purple Crystals must be deactivated ASAP, or it’ll kill every factory worker with the collar.

Help Gondians out and ensure Gondian Zanner Tooblin survives the fight. He will be a great help later. But if he dies, you can use Speak with the Dead scroll or spell to talk with him. Loot the key to the Security office from one of the defeated enemies. Head to the back room and to the basement (X: -319 Y: -149).

More Gondians try to win their freedom in the basement, so help them. Try to stun or use crowd control spells and actions, such as prone, immobilize, Command, or Banish spells, to make the task easier. When the fight ends, speak again with survivors and take the key to the Control Centre Antechamber. It’s where the Steel Watcher Titan boss is located, alongside three steel watch constructs and the Gontr Mael in BG3. Unlock the next door (X: -1962 Y: 459) and prepare for the last fight.

Gontr Mael in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) - Legendary Bow

The fight is more manageable than the previous ones. The boss is vulnerable to lightning damage, and you must only avoid his AoE special attack. Truly, the steel watch constructs are a far more significant threat than the boss. After the fight, you can pick up Gontr Mael, a Legendary longbow from the Steel Watcher Titan boss, and enjoy your new weapon in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)!
