If you access Balthazar’s Secret Room in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll find a few powerful items and potentially a permanent buff for Gale.
When you first arrive at the Moonrise Towers in Baldur’s Gate Act 2, Disciple Z’rell sends you to find Balthazar. Balthazar is a necromancer investigating a relic for General Ketheric Thorm. If you choose the right dialogue, she will send you to Balthazar’s room to get a moonlantern. What you may not have discovered during your first time in Balthazar’s room is a hidden room behind his bookshelves.
Getting to Balthazar’s Room in the Moonrise Towers
If you just arrived at the Moonrise Towers, you must go upstairs to talk with Disciple Z’rell. From the main hall, take a right to go upstairs, and you’ll meet Disciple Z’rell at the end of the hallway. The dialogue options you choose are essential to obtaining Balthazar’s room key, which will let you access Balthazar’s secret room in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Of the choices available, Disciple Z’rell will give you Balthazar’s room key when you tell her, “Understood – I’m ready to head out.”
Then, you’ll need to turn around and unlock Balthazar’s room down the hall to your left inside a room lined with bookshelves. Inside, there’s quite a grotesque scene that makes sense when you meet Balthazar in the Gauntlet of Shar.
Accessing Balthazar’s Secret Room
Inside Balthazar’s room, the torch you were sent to grab is directly in front of the doorway. On your left, the giant bookcase hides the entrance to a secret room. To access the room, you’ll first need to look through the room until you find a heart. Then, you can search either of the dead bodies in front of the bookcase to find a heart.
After finding a heart, interact with the upper right set of books on the bookcase to insert an item into the altar. Finally, insert the heart you looted and the bookcase will open, revealing a hidden room within.
You can loot the rest of the bookshelves once you access Balthazar’s secret room in Baldur’s Gate 3. You can find very rare scrolls in the bookcases.
What Is in Balthazar’s Secret Room in Baldur’s Gate 3?
While the primary draw to find the room is an inscription on the desk, Balthazar’s Ritual Circle, there are other potential upgrades in the room.
If you have Gale in your party, he will discuss the rune and the ability to forge a Moonlantern out of the components on the table. He can either forge the lantern or destroy the rune.
Forging the lantern will give you the Shadow Lantern, which can summon a shade to aid you in battle. While this is a unique item, it’s not as strong as the buff received for destroying the ritual circle. If you choose to destroy the rune, Gale receives a powerful permanent buff, Mystra’s Benevolence. This buff makes it completely worth it to access Balthazar’s secret room as early as possible.
