Discover everything we know about Dragon’s Dogma 2, including release date, platforms, story, gameplay, and more!
The original Dragon’s Dogma was first released in 2012, and fantasy action RPG fans have been hoping for another chance to experience the unique world and combat style ever since. Finally, a bit over a decade later, Dragon’s Dogma II is nearing release in early 2024. It will be a single-player, action/adventure RPG with a robust story, a much larger, expansive map to explore, and new monsters to vanquish! Let’s break down all the ‘need-to-know’ information about one of this year’s major releases.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Release Date
Developed and published by Capcom, Dragon’s Dogma 2 will have a global release date of March 22, 2024. Currently, there has been no definite information announced regarding release times in specific time zones. It’s been speculated that the game will release at midnight for each timezone, but there has yet to be any official confirmation of this by Capcom.
In the run-up to the game, however, Capcom has released a Character Creator & Storage demo for players on all platforms. This can be downloaded for free right now, and players create their desired Arisen and Pawn characters. There are five available slots for each so you can experiment, however, when the official game releases you’ll only be able to transfer one of each over.
Furthermore, it appears that the pre-load of the game is available on Xbox. However, for players on other platforms, the pre-load will likely not be available until March 20. The drop on Xbos does us some insight into the size of the game, which appears to be a reasonable 70GB.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Platforms
Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be available on Playstation 5, Xbox Series X\S, and on PC. Moreover, there do not appear to be any plans to release the game on the Nintendo Switch anytime soon.
Currently, neither Capcom nor Xbox have revealed any plans to make Dragon’s Dogma 2 available day one on Game Pass. Similarly, there has been no announcement of when or even if the game will be available through Playstation Plus. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a highly anticipated sequel to a successful single-player RPG, so this likely shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. If you want to play the game at launch, you’ll have to buy it outright.
Finally, for those who are looking to play the game on PC, be sure to check out the System Requirements to make sure your desktop or laptop has the necessary power to smoothly run the game.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Story and Setting
In Dragon’s Dogma 2 the story centers around you as an Arisen, someone whose heart was stolen by a dragon. Moreover, while this connection to the dragon gives you powers, your ultimate goal is to eventually find and slay it. Players of the first game will find this premise very familiar. However, although the game has been called a sequel to the first, subsequent information has revealed that this new story will take place in a parallel world.
Your quest to defeat the dragon may not be as straightforward as it seems, however. In the human kingdom of Vermund, the Arisen should rule as king. But the current Regent supports her own son as a false Arisen, seeking to consolidate her power. In contrast, the beastren kingdom of Battahl refuses to venerate the Arisen and instead worships the Lambent Flame. Additionally, there is a third elven kingdom. However, they sequester themselves in the Sacred Arbor, and generally refuse to interact with the outside world.
As you make your journey to complete this monumental task, you can gather dedicated companions to your side. These individuals are called Pawns, and within the world of Dragon’s Dogma they are said to lack emotion and a true will of their own. Their one purpose is to follow and aid the Arisen. In Dragon’s Dogma 2 you will be able to create one custom built Pawn with the vocation of your choosing, while others will need to be recruited.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Gameplay
The Dragon’s Dogma franchise is especially known for its unique companion system, enemy encounters, and combat classes. In a recent showcase, the developers at Capcom highlighted the photo-realistic appearance of the character creator and the many varied options you have to make your Arisen character look exactly however you want it to.
In Dragon’s Dogma 2, traditional RPG classes are called Vocations, and you can select any of the Starting or Advanced vocations for your Arisen or custom-made Pawn. Hybrid vocations are available to the Arisen only. At this time, 10 total vocations have been confirmed for Dragon’s Dogma 2, though we may see more when the game officially releases. Whether you like to play an in-your-face melee or ranged caster, the variety of available vocations means that any player can find something to fit their preferred playstyle.
One of the main appeals of Dragon’s Dogma 2 gameplay is the combat encounters and the fights with individuals bosses and large monsters. Strategy when approaching these potentially lethal creatures is vital. You’ll need to examine your opponent for weaknesses to exploit, use the environment and even the monsters themselves to climb, leap and strike to land blows in critical spots. Party composition is also hugely important. What vocation is your Arisen, and which Pawns with what vocations do you bring with you? Bringing the right party composition with you can make all the difference in the level of difficulty.
