Marvel Rivals is almost here, and lots of players are looking to jump into the shoes of iconic characters and wreck the opposition. However, with so many characters to pick and choose from, it may be difficult to know the one that’s right for you. The choice is made harder when the iconic characters are spread across three distinct roles: Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist. The Vanguards in Marvel Rivals function similarly to the Tanks in Overwatch. Their primary goal is to divert attention from the rest of the team and absorb incoming damage. They often lead the charge and help gain territory across the maps.

In this guide, we shall go over the five best Vanguards in Marvel Rivals so you can be better prepared when the game launches.

1) Hulk

It was a no-brainer that the Hulk would be a tank, even before the classes were announced, and Marvel Rivals does the character justice by making him a brute force. Sporting a massive 800 HP, which can be doubled when using the Ultimate Hulk Smash, Hulk can maneuver around the arena and acquire space with little to no trouble. He also brings a shield that guards all allies, ensuring that the push is sustained and relentless. Hulk also has team-ups available with Iron Man and Dr. Strange and can boost their abilities.

2) Venom

Much like the Hulk, Venom uses his giant size to his advantage and is the perfect Vanguard. He, too, boasts 800 HP, which is doubled with the use of the Ultimate. Venom dishes out damage just as well as he absorbs it and can take on an entire team by himself. He can burst across the map with ease and rush to the enemies, making it easier for his team to run past to the objective. Venom also syncs up with Peni Parker and Spider-Man for high-damage AOE attacks.

3) Dr Strange

While nowhere close to a tank in terms of build, Stephen Strange makes up for it by using magic in abundance. Strange specializes more in absorbing damage than dealing it, unlike his other Vanguard counterparts. His Shield of Seraphim allows him to shield teammates while making a push. Strange’s portals, too, are something to watch out for, as he can use them to jump the enemies from unexpected angles. His offensive capabilities are mostly through his team-ups with Hulk and Iron Man, which allow him to boost these characters.

4) Thor

The God of Thunder is more than capable of leading a charge in battle, and Marvel Rivals reflects that through his Vanguard capabilities. He hits hard. Real hard. This allows Thor to be a menace to the opposition. The high damage, though, is balanced by Thor’s relatively lower HP, which sits at 600 HP (can be raised to 800 with Awakened). Thor will not help you shield your teammates or help you absorb damage. He will, however, help you pummel the opposition and attract all their attention. Thor can team up with Loki, Hela, and Storm.

5) Groot

The final entry on this list is Groot himself. While simple-minded and innocent at heart, Groot is more than capable of holding his own in battle. Groot comes with a massive health pool of 850 HP. This makes him ideal to absorb damage in his teammates’ stead. The character is best used to build large walls to funnel enemies through choke points while also shielding his teammates. Groot has team-ups with Jeff the Land Shark and Rocket Raccoon.
